Makhana Kheer Recipe: The Perfect Sweet Treat For Sawan And Navratri Fasts

Here’s a delicious Makhana Kheer recipe, perfect for Sawan and Navratri fasts—light, sattvik, and rich in flavor:

🌸 Makhana Kheer Recipe (Fasting Special)

Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 20–25 mins
Serves: 2–3

📝 Ingredients:

  • 1 cup makhana (fox nuts/lotus seeds)

  • 2½ cups milk (full cream preferred)

  • 1–2 tsp ghee

  • 2–3 tbsp sugar (or jaggery powder for a healthier version)

  • 4–5 cashews, chopped

  • 4–5 almonds, chopped

  • 2 cardamom pods, crushed (or ¼ tsp cardamom powder)

  • A few saffron strands (optional)

  • 1 tbsp raisins (optional)

  • 1 tsp chironji seeds (optional)

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Roast Makhana
Heat 1 tsp ghee in a pan. Add makhana and roast on low flame for 5–6 minutes until crisp. Set aside to cool, then roughly crush half of them (leave some whole for texture).

  2. Boil the Milk
In a thick-bottomed pan, boil the milk and let it simmer for 5–7 minutes until slightly reduced.

  3. Add Makhana
Add the crushed and whole makhana to the milk. Stir and cook for 10–12 minutes on low flame, stirring occasionally so it doesn’t stick.

  4. Flavor It
Add sugar, cardamom, saffron, and chopped nuts. Let it simmer for another 5 minutes until the kheer thickens.

  5. Finish Off
Turn off the heat. Add raisins and a little more ghee if desired. Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

🥄 Serving Tips:

  • Serve warm or chilled, depending on your preference.

  • You can garnish with more nuts or rose petals for a festive touch.

Why It’s Ideal for Fasting:

  • Satvik and grain-free

  • Light on the stomach

  • High in calcium, protein, and energy

  • Naturally gluten-free and vrat-friendly
