As of January 25, 2025, health authorities have identified 73 individuals affected by this rare neurological disorder. Among these cases, 14 patients are on ventilator support.

In response to this surge, the Maharashtra State Health Department has formed a Rapid Response Team (RRT) to investigate the sudden rise in GBS cases. The RRT, in collaboration with the Pune Municipal Corporation and local health authorities, has been conducting extensive surveillance in affected areas, including Sinhagad, Dhayari, and Khadakwasla, as well as parts of Pimpri Chinchwad and rural regions. Over 7,200 homes have been surveyed to identify potential sources and prevent further spread.

Preliminary investigations have detected the presence of Campylobacter jejuni bacteria in some patients. This bacterium is commonly found in contaminated water and food and has been associated with GBS outbreaks worldwide. Health officials are collecting stool and water samples from affected areas to determine the source of contamination.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks peripheral nerves, leading to symptoms such as weakness, numbness, and, in severe cases, paralysis. While the exact cause remains unclear, infections often precede the onset of GBS symptoms. Health authorities emphasize that, although alarming, GBS does not lead to widespread outbreaks. Most patients recover fully with appropriate treatment, though recovery can take months to years.

The health department continues to monitor the situation closely and advises the public to maintain good hygiene practices, such as consuming safe water and properly cooked food, to reduce the risk of infection. Individuals experiencing symptoms like sudden weakness, numbness, or tingling sensations are urged to seek immediate medical attention.
